The progressive discipline process involves applying increasing disciplinary action each time a violation is repeated. Usually the disciplinary action starts with a verbal warning, ultimately progressing to termination if the employee fails to correct their unacceptable behavior.
One drawback to progressive discipline policies is that they may erode the at-will employment relationship and may diminish the employer’s right to discipline or terminate an employee immediately.
Some violations, such as theft or violence in the workplace, may require bypassing warnings and proceeding to discharging the employee immediately.
