Whether you are covered by one or both of the outdoor or indoor heat illness prevention standards, you must establish, implement and maintain a written Heat Illness Prevention Plan. The plan can be included as part of your IIPP.1 Employers covered by both outdoor and indoor heat illness prevention standards can create one plan to address procedures under both standards.

The plan, at a minimum, must contain the following:

Procedures for provision of water. (See Providing Water).
Procedures for providing access to shade or cool-down areas. (See Providing Shade).
Emergency response procedures. (See Emergency Response Procedures).
Acclimatization methods and procedures (See Acclimatization).
High-heat procedures. (See Implementing High-Heat Procedures).
Assessment and control measures (indoor standard only). See Assessment and Control Measures for Indoor Workers.

Employees and supervisors must be trained on these procedures so they can understand and implement the employer's plan. There are also specific training requirements (see Heat Illness Training).

The written plan must be in both English and the language understood by the majority of employees. The plan must also be available at the worksite.

You must provide this documentation to Cal/OSHA upon request.
