What does it mean to be exempt?

Federal and state laws exempt certain employees from wage and hour requirements. Being classified as "exempt" means an employee is not subject to the Industrial Welfare Commission (IWC) Wage Order sections pertaining to overtime, minimum wage, recordkeeping, uniforms and equipment, cash shortage and breakage, meal periods, and rest periods. Similarly, federal minimum wage and overtime provisions do not apply.
