Are employees on alternative workweek schedules entitled to overtime, and if so, how do I pay them overtime?

Yes. Employees on alternative workweek schedules earn overtime differently than employees who receive overtime after eight hours in a workday.

Employees must be paid time and one-half for work beyond the hours established in the alternative workweek schedule, up to 12 hours in a workday, and for all hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek.

Double time must be paid for work beyond 12 hours in a workday and for work beyond eight hours on non-scheduled days under the alternative workweek agreement.

Alternative work week schedules must be pre-scheduled. These rules do not apply to occasional employee requests to modify schedules, such as requests for makeup time.
