Employers must provide the employee with the state disability insurance (SDI) brochure and a copy of the pregnancy disability leave (PDL) notice. The PDL notice must be given to the employee as soon as practicable after the employee tells you of their pregnancy, or sooner if they inquire about reasonable accommodation, transfer or PDL.
In addition to giving the employee the SDI brochure and the PDL notice, employers must also post the PDL notice on its premises in a conspicuous location. The PDL notice is available for purchase as part of the California and Federal Employment Notices poster available at the CalChamber Store.
If an employer publishes an employee handbook that describes other kinds of reasonable accommodation, transfers or temporary disability leaves available to its employees, the employer must include a description of PDL, reasonable accommodation or transfer in any edition of its handbook.
In addition to the required notifications, California's Civil Rights Department provides informational brochures that may be distributed to employees. There is no legal requirement to distribute these brochures.
